EDiTor’s Piece of the Day 18.01.2012 – Rex Dry Pipe Tentacles

Rex is the owner of Blissful Glass and an experienced glass blower that creates uniquely coloured and designed pieces for aficionados around the world. We have made it a point to collect glass pieces from the finest blowers out there and involved with the borosilicate revolution going on in America. Rex is at the top of this list amongst other great glass artists.

Introducing this colourful and vibrant Rex Dry Pipe with Tentacles. This glass pipe is made from the finest coloured borosilicate glass. It is pulled and worked to perfection. The main body of the pipe is pulled with shades of black and dark blue to give a midnight sky effect.

The first thing to strike the eye with this piece is the large honeycomb marble at the top of the pipe which peeps out like a creature’s eye. This marble is a very light brown honey colour with different shades of blue and green depending on what angle the marble is viewed.

The bowl is pulled with different shades of blue, green and purple creating a light contrast to the darker base of the pipe. The bowl is adorned with their own unique set of small marbles that carry floral and galaxy patterns. These marbles are one-offs and vary with each piece. There is also a carb hole on the left side of each bowl.

There is a large round chamber below the pipe and behind the honeycomb marble that has 6 large tentacles protruding from all around. These tentacles carry the dark blue and black pulled colour and curl up the pipe towards the mouthpiece to finish up this coloured glass pipe.

EDiTor’s Piece of the Day 17.01.2012 – Brandon Martin Electroformed Creature Slide

This Brandon Martin Electroformed Creature Slide is a meticulously detailed fine piece of glass art. This slide is like no other in terms of design and the amount of craftsmanship put into it.

The detail and imagination of Brandon Martin’s work goes beyond even some of the best glass blowers out there. He is a true visionary that makes pieces with details that you’ll come to notice months after owning a piece.

This heady glass slide is mainly made up of red glass and pulled to effect with shades of brown. The shape resembles an ant warrior. There are two black beads which act as the eyes for the creature. The piece has some amazing electroformed work throughout which looks like body armour to the creature. There is an emerald green flat glass circle on one side of the creatures head. One arm is much larger than the other and houses what looks like the end of an electric screwdriver that has been damaged. This protruding screwdriver has electroformed work throughout and adds real aesthetic weight to this piece.

This slide fits into a 14.5mm ground joint and comes with a wooden stand to hold it upright whilst resting.

EDiTor’s Piece of the Day – Toro and Pakoh Collaboration FYC 7 to 13 Arm Tree Perc

This Toro and Pakoh Collaboration is a clash of the titans. The FYC series sees two of the best glass blowers in the industry come together, bringing you a hybrid with this 7 to 13 arm tree perc.

Toro is unrivalled in the industry when it comes to creating functional scientific glass bongs. His bongs are accepted as some of the best scientific glass worldwide because of his perfectly made percolators and meticulously worked and measured borosilicate glass.

Pakoh is a visionary with his unique contemporary designs. From his creative and elegant slides to his brilliant bubblers, Pakoh never disappoints in bringing you designs that resemble modern day culture that are handmade and flawless in their build.

This Toro and Pakoh Collaboration FYC 7 to 13 Arm Tree Perc Glass Bong resembles a Toro Fixed Stem 7/13 Arm. There is a pull out style ice pinches slide that fits into an 18.8mm ground joint. The stemless bong has a typical Toro arm fixed at a 90 degree angle that feed into the 7 arm tree perc. Each arm on the percolator has two slits for diffusion. Smoke then rises from the bottom half of this piece into the second chamber that houses the 13 arm tree perc for a second round of smoke treatment. This second perc has a worked dome at the top of it. After feeding through this second 13 arm perc, smoke rises through the straight tube at the top, into the mouthpiece.

Pakoh finishes this piece by sandblasting some of his signature style designs all over it. The bottom half is riddled with sandblasted Pakoh style brickwork against clear glass. There is also a sandblasted car, a sandblasted ‘FYC’ logo and a small sandblasted barcode underneath the fixed stem that reads ‘Pakoh-Toro’. The pull out style bowl and ground joint are all sandblasted with effects as well. The second chamber is fully sandblasted with some clear glass floral designs around the bong. The straight tube at the top has similar sandblasted floral designs set against clear glass just below the mouthpiece.

A truly brilliant piece to hold made by two of the best, this collaboration has created one of the most aesthetically pleasing and functional bongs on the market.

This hand pulled Sherlock pipe features a heavily worked mouthpiece with a vibrantly coloured switchback design that contains shades of blue, yellow, red and black. The colour contrast on this design just pops right out and catches the eye! It really gives this piece some aesthetic weight. The striking milli designs are used to emphasize the colour contrast in the different borosilicate glass and it merges wonderfully from the deep greens to the vibrant blues.

EDiTor’s Piece of the Day 12.01.2012 – Innerfire Butterscotch Honeycomb Percolated Bubbler with Oil Dome`

Oil and concentrate fans unite! Check out the Innerfire Butterscotch Honeycomb Percolated Bubbler with Oil Dome! Phew!! That was a mouthful. Innerfire usually makes pieces with very bright and vibrant colours. This piece however, is coloured with more subtle tones of red and orange which contrast really elegantly with the honeycomb on the pipe and maintain the vibrancy of the whole piece.

The butterscotch honeycomb percolated bubbler comes with a variety of quirks and focal points. This includes the unique dome style glass perc. There are also a number of decorative honeycomb marbles or millie’s which grace a number of points of this bubbler.

When vertical the entire bubbler would rest on a single honeycomb milli. As you pass various focal points of the piece you eventually reach the magnificent worked, hand pulled, bubbler style mouthpiece.

The beauty of this bubbler is the oil dome attachment that is included. The honeycomb marbles just round this piece off as a truly excellent piece of art glass.

All of his pieces have solid coloured glass that has been perfectly worked. Schmitz is a true pioneer in this borosilicate glass revolution.

The Schmitz Kite Glass Slide is bold and vibrant in design. The coloured glass canes provide an excellent base for Schmitz to make this piece of art his own. There’s a number of hand pulled wig wags along with some additional glass milliefiori that give this piece its elegance. The blood red rim has such a strong and beautiful contrast to the pulled switchback designs and milliefiori.

Steve Gelb is a master at his craft, a true artist that consistently produces quality pieces. This Steve Gelb Double Glass Bubbler is testament to that. This luxurious piece of glass art stands an astonishing 1 foot tall and is covered in a soothing green/aqua design that has become a major characteristic of this artist’s work.

The 2 chamber bubbler (hence ‘double’ bubbler) features a diffused downstem as a well as a snorkel carb attached to the primary chamber alongside 2 reversal millefiori, which complements the style and colour of this masterpiece.

There is also a stunning reticello design mouthpiece that has extra linework done on it to add that extra bit of uniqueness to the piece. One of my personal favourite parts about this piece is the gorgeous 2 arm, treeless perc which is housed in the back can and is emblazoned with the signature ‘SG’ millefiori on the front chamber.

This is nothing less than what we have come to expect from Steve Gelb in terms of style, functionality, quality and uniqueness. This is a very worthy candidate for our EDiTor’s Piece of the Day, so feast yourselves on this eye candy.
