Amsterdam
is absolutely full of hotels. These range from luxury 4 star affairs,
complete with friendly staff, room service and immaculate on-suite bathroom
and shower facilities; to crumbling buildings featuring dodgy looking
staff, shoe box rooms, and leaky light fittings.
If you're just in Amsterdam to cruise the coffee shops and bars, it
makes little difference where you stay, and the closer to the action,
the better.
You can find many hotels in Amsterdam by looking on the internet and
most will accept bookings online with a credit card.
It's not essential to have booked a hotel before you arrive, as you
can very easily find a place to stay within 10 minutes of getting off
of the train, hotels are lined up along the main road leading out of
Amsterdam Central station.
On my first trip to Amsterdam, a rainy Friday night, we were accosted
the second we stepped out of the station, by a smiling stranger, brandishing
an umbrella.
He proceeded to shield us from the rain as he asked us if we had anywhere
to stay, and led us to his hotel just up the road. You shouldn't have
a problem!
Hotel prices in Amsterdam range from around £30 - £50 a
night, depending on where you end up. Most hotels will include a breakfast
either a full English, or in most cases a 'Continental' breakfast largely
consisting of cheese, ham and bread products.
There are hostels dotted around Amsterdam Central, which offer a slightly
cheaper alternative. I can't tell you much about them, as we didn't
manage to find any, but they're around somewhere!
On this occasion, we checked into the 'Delta hotel' for around £40
a night. The room was a lot better than expected, and even included
an electronic combination safe for valuables.
As you're going to be pretty stoned most of the time, I'd suggest
leaving your passport in the safe.
With luggage dumped, and realisations of forgotten items accepted, we
set out into the night to look for some skunk...
