Thai-tanic - A True 'Big Steamer'Thai. The sound of these four letters alone lets many growers and smokers click their tongues, thinking of those trippy Sativa effects resulting from good home-grown Thai weed. But then they may wrinkle their brow, thinking: "No doubt about that special high, if only it would not be have to be grown with such effort, stretch like hell, yield that low, and take ages for ripening." Legitimate concerns, because that's quite exactly the typical indoor Thai plant profile, sometimes made even worse by hermaphrodism problems. And, yes indeed, experiencing a pure Thai that takes 18 weeks for flowering until harvest scissors can be pulled out is a gruelling task. But regardless of these problems, the exotic aspect and effect of Thai weed fascinates many people's minds." Others, however, are familiar with Thai weed merely in its bad quality state as brown, over-fermented, dry and crumbly import herb sold in Dutch coffee shops at fairly low prices. But this stuff is far away from delivering that sometimes overwhelmingly strong Sativa up-high arising from properly grown and dried Thai buds with selected genetics. ![]() Thaitanic Growroom The Flying Dutchmen (TFLD) seed bank promises to offer a solution for all those Thai growing problems: Thai-tanic, a Thai/Skunk #1 cross that shall feature a shortened flowering time of 9-11 weeks, high yield and moderate height, characteristics that are brought in by the dominating Skunk#1 traits of the father. The other trick about Thai-tanic is the fact that it preserves that typical chocolate Thai smell taste and soaring Sativa high. Here the Thai mother could win through, according to TFLD. They are representing high quality, especially when it comes to classic strains. Eddy, the seed bank's breeding master mind, was one of the three early cannabis pioneers in Holland (besides Nevil Schoenmakers and Ben Dronkers) who received a large genetic basis from the hands of an US grower in the mid-eighties, including various classic strains, such as Early California, Thai, Mexican, Silver Haze from Columbia, Afghani, South African, and, last, but for sure not least, the ground-breaking Skunk#1 which should quickly become the real power plant of the Dutch cannabis boom. Back in those days, large-scale greenhouse cultivation of marijuana was still common in Holland. The aforementioned growers sowed the new genetics on ten thousands of square meters, and as a standard, 10,000 plants were cultivated in the first Dutch generation of an imported US strain, resulting in a wide selection pool for further development. In view of this background, one can be sure of the high quality, thoroughly selected genetics that are contained within The TFLD's versions of Skunk#1 and Thai, and Eddy kept an special eye on these lines, also hybridizing them with one another for creating Thai-tanic. Nevertheless, for every grower, also the most reliable genetic sources have to stand the cultivation test in order to verify their excellent reputation. So five Thai-tanic seeds were put into the ground, and they all quickly sprouted, growing into healthy seedlings. Already in this early stage of growth, the dominant Sativa traits were expressed in the outer appearance, as the Thai-tanic's stems exhibited far wider internodes than their Indica-dominated neighbourhood plants (Sweet Purple), clearly overtopping them. So obviously these Thai-tanics were going to become not quite as 'compact' as described in the TFLD's catalogue. Grown under 400 + 250 W HPS, their height was already 40-50 cm 3 weeks after germination. Actually one should have forced them into flowering in this stage of growth already in order to end up in a still comfortable height, but the unavoidable circumstance of simultaneously testing the slowly-growing Indica Sweet Purple forced me to make a compromise, keeping the whole garden in the vegetative stage for 4.5 weeks (including germination). ![]() Thaitanic Main Cola The Thai-tanic plants formed beautiful classic Sativa leafs, with thin, long and sharply serrated fingers, coloured in a fairly dark green. The plants' top shoots were bent down horizontally after 3.5 weeks, in order to keep them in line with the Indica plants and to promote horizontal growth with a lot of strong shoots and accordingly big buds later on. After turning the lights to 12/12, three out of five Thai-tanic plants finally proved to be female and were kept. The gender was revealed quite lately thereby, 9-11 days after shortening the light cycle. Resin production, however, set in only one week later, which was most promising. During flowering, the Thai-tanics really turned into huge 'steamers', due to their horizontal growth with countless flowering shoots. They produced marvellous buds, with a high calyx-to-leaf ratio and lots of resin. But although being quite dense for a Thai, they exhibited that typical, slightly airy and long-drawn 'foxtail-bud' structure so that the single buds actually were no heavyweight champions. But their vast total number made for a very high total yield, after 75-80 days of flowering, the three plants yielded between 30 and 40 grams which was an unusually high amount considering regular indoor Sativa yields. I don't think that the harvest would have been that large, if I had not bent the plants down - the horizontal growth with many shoots being in optimum distance to the light source really did the trick. The Thai-tanic's smell and aroma really turned out to have that 'cannasseur's' quality, delivering the desired classical Thai attributes: sweet and chocolate-like, producing a mild and delicious smoke. The high makes you look deeply into the eye of the Thai tiger?an intensive Sativa energy rush causes accelerated heartbeat, the Thai-tanic's Sativa steam definitely puts the heating on you! Best of all, this crystal clear up-high is of long duration, and you won't be able to spend that time without starting any activity, since the straight Sativa kick pushes you forward. On the whole, the Thai-tanics could completely fulfill the high expectations, apart from the fact that their growth pattern exhibited far more of that typical Thai stretch effect than TFLD do promise. But as shown, bending down the plants early in the vegetative stage is a good solution to that problem, resulting in excellent yields. Green Born Identity - G.B.I. Cultivation Data:
