Interview with Adam of T.H.Seeds

Recently weed world visited Adam at his headquarters T.H.Seeds/Hempworks in the centre of Amsterdam to find out a little more about him and what makes the strains created at T.H.Seeds unique.

Hi there Adam, welcome to weed world, can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hello there, about myself, well I was born in New York and was bought up living between New York and California. Moved to Amsterdam in 1989 for the first couple of years I worked at the sensi hash museum for sensi seeds I then moved on to develop one of my own strains the bubblegum and started the C.I.A.

The C.I.A?

Yes cannabis in Amsterdam, it was a little similar to the old positronics a meeting place where anyone was welcome to share info and advice, it was a great place to meet fellow ex patriots, at that time it was very open and people would share or swap clones freely, this is why you see certain breeders with the same genetic background. Most of the American breeders like Simon from serious, Tony from Sagamartha & Soma were all part of the CIA movement. By 1993 we had started to venture into the different uses of Hemp, toiletries, paper & clothing, at the time there were around 400 coffeeshops in Amsterdam but no one knew where to buy hemp products this is when we opened hempworks.

Tell us about your varieties.

Well, in our current range we have 14 strains, which is a good representation of what we have been doing for the last 11 or so years: Chocolate Chunk, Mr Bubble, Acorn and the Sage. Our latest cannabis cup winner was the Mk Ultra which won in the Indica category, as well as winning the previous year with the Hog, but the hottest one we have is the Mk Ultra.

The Mk Ultra is a cross of OG Kush what's that?

Yeah, the OG (original gangster) Kush is from L.A. California, basically this is the HOTTEST weed going around California it was a well guarded clone strain where you would see people happy to pay $600 an ounce I was given a clone by friends who by the way, are not gangsters! Just growers. The first time I ever smoked this I said to my crew that this is going to win the cup! It grows very straight, doesn't want to branch too much it has these lovely long, big leaves even though its kush name suggests its an Indica there is defiantly some Sativa in there .The taste of the Mk Ultra is unique, a real piney, spicy flavour, if you really want a weed with an excellent flavour this is the one, like medicine you'll be taking it everyday!

And on the Sativa side?

Definitely the Sage (Sativa Afghani Genetic Equilibrium). The background of the Sage is the Big Sur holy acquired around the Santa Cruz area. This has to be overall my favourite smoke, I personally prefer to smoke Sativas, I smoke everyday and love the high you get from smoking a good Sativa, actually a couple of years ago, when the Hog won I was so sure my Sage would win the Sativa entry. I have been constantly improving the Sage to the point know that this is the connoisseurs choice of smoke, It can take from 11 up to 13 weeks flowering which is a long time, but compared to other haze/Sativa strains which can take 15 weeks and more to finish this is quite short as well as getting a good satisfying yield, with the Sage you will want to keep it all for yourself its that good and the high you get from the sage is well worth the time and effort to grow.

Your preferred growing method?

For personal use go for a good bio soil follow the nutrient guidelines of that particular company, In Europe most particularly Holland there are hundreds of different nutrient companies promising bigger this, better that, more yield etc. I recommend giving them a try but sticking with them for that crop rather than mixing this with that. As to my preferred growing method for production, go for coco, coco slabs, to me I find using the slabs a lot more controllable.

Finally, any tips for our green fingered U.K. readers?

Great question. If a plant is healthy from the beginning, has vigorous growth and is bug free, then the need for extra nutrients/boosters isn't necessary, and you will find the natural balance of your garden. Companies are always offering better results, promises of better yield etc. but how are you going to tell if you don't know how your garden grows with little or no aid from extra nutrients or boosters? Also, before you put your garden into flowering from 18 to 12 hours, give the plants 36 hours of darkness; by doing this it, will reset the plants natural body clock. After 36 hours (or anything between 24 and 40 hours) the plant will go straight into flowering rather than adjusting from 18 to 12 which in some strains can mean an extra few weeks. When the plant is finished give it another 36 hours, this will reset the body clock again this time the plant knows it is finished and will push out all remaining energy into its last trichome production try it. There is so much different advice or tips that the only thing I can recommend is that you visit us here at Hempworks the next time you come to Amsterdam: we are on the Nieuwendijk to the left of central station. Here you will find a great selection of Hemp wear, seeds and great glass ware as well as a good hit of sage! See you soon.
