To begin, you will want to fill up your bong with fresh, cool water. 

Fill it up enough so that the slits at the end of the downstem are submerged in water. Take a few draws from the bong to ensure the water level is right. If water doesn't touch your lips, you are good to go on to the next step. 

Next, we want to take our ground dry herbs, and pack the bowl loosely. 

Once you have your lighter ready, place your lips against the mouthpiece to form a seal. Tilt the lighter towards the bowl, bringing the flame to the herb, and gently inhale.

To clean your bong, start by removing the downstem and the bowl and setting them aside. 

Empty out any water inside the bong as well.

Next, take some isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt and add them to the inside of the bong. Plug up the holes of the pipe and give it a good shake for about 5 minutes or so. Spend a little extra time focusing on the dirtier areas. 

The alcohol should cut through the grime while the abrasive, coarse salt agitates the resin to keep it from clinging to the walls of the glass.

Finally, empty out the alcohol/salt mix and rinse out the bong with warm water and maybe even a bit of dish soap.
